VCE HEALTH AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

HHD isn’t about memorising facts – it’s about understanding how health and wellbeing is a dynamic and subjective concept relevant to Australians and all people around the world. From the biological, sociocultural and environmental factors that contribute to variations in health status and burden of disease in Australia, to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, HHD is about giving you a holistic overview of how health plays out close to home, and across international borders!

What You'll Cover With Us

Australia's health in a globalised world (Unit 3)

Dive into the changing nature of health and wellbeing, and the various health status and burden of disease indicators used to measure health in Australia. You’ll learn about the benefits of optimal health and wellbeing and appreciate its importance as a resource individually, nationally and globally. Then you’ll consider how health status differs between groups and consider how risky health behaviours such as smoking and nutritional imbalance contribute to health status. Unit 3 will close with consideration of the ways in which we promote health in Australia, with close reference to the Ottawa Charter and Social Model of health. You’ll discover how the biomedical model is responsible for diagnosis, treatment and cure of disease and analyse reasons why the biomedical model is only one of several approaches required to achieve optimal health and wellbeing.

Global health and human development (Unit 4)

Throughout Unit 4, you’ll learn to analyse the similarities and differences in health status and human development globally and analyse the factors that contribute to these differences. You’ll consider the concept of human development and recognise that access to a decent standard of living is essential for Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Wellbeing to be achieved. You’ll come to appreciate the work of the World Health Organisation and consider how global trends like tourism and mass migration impact global health and wellbeing.

THE ATAR STAR Method

How We Work With You

We make complex biology accessible and engaging. Instead of just memorising facts, we help you understand the big picture and how everything connects. We focus on building your key skills and ability to respond to higher-order thinking questions. Health has become very conceptual – our job is to help you master extended responses (6, 8 and 10 markers), recognising that structure is just as important as content for you to demonstrate your understanding.

Your Individual Journey

Every student approaches HHD differently. Some love Unit 3’s Australian focus, others enjoy the big picture view offered by Unit 4. Regardless, we dispel the myth that HHD is easy by giving you scope to work on the stuff that everyone trips up on, and we support you every step of the way. HHD is one of those subjects where given the right practice, and enough work, you can reliably work your way through to brilliance.

Skills That Last

VCE Health and Human Development is designed to build your health literacy. Health literacy relates to the extent to which you can access, critique, understand and use health information and services in ways that promote and maintain your health and wellbeing. You’ll develop your ability to navigate and analyse health information, to critically recognise and appreciate the role of health promotion, and to evaluate healthcare initiatives and interventions for their strengths and weaknesses. Whether you’re heading into health sciences, nursing, medicine, or any other field, you’ll benefit from your ability to analyse data, and understand how the healthcare system works and sometimes, just doesn’t.

Why We're Different

We know that HHD isn’t easy. It’s not meant to be, and, put simply, it’s just not. We break HHD into digestible chunks, help you get over the huge memorisation overload required to do well in this subject, and then help you leverage your knowledge to write sophisticated, nuanced and coherent extended analysis responses that actually make the difference between you and the next student. We help you see how content from Units 3 and 4 connect, and expose you to different ways in which cross-Unit questions might make their way onto your exams.
