VCE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Let’s be real – you’ve chosen to study VCE English Language because you either don’t like English or reading novels, are a Maths-Science kinda student, did it because it scales up, or because you absolutely love learning about the technicalities that make English work. By choosing VCE English Language, you have entered the world of linguistics—a world where you explore how language works and when and why we use the language we do. Regardless of your reason for selecting EngLang, at ATAR STAR, we’ll meet you where you’re at, enhance your strengths, and empower you with the knowledge and skills you need to excel.

What You'll Cover With Us

Metalanguage

This is your key to unlocking success in EngLang. Understanding the appropriate metalanguage allows you to identify and analyse stylistic and discourse features in a wide range of unseen texts. This isn’t about memorising arbitrary examples of metalanguage from a few texts or doing random exercises. We’ll help you become a metalanguage pro by strategically working through feature-rich, context-specific texts that give you a whole new language to work with – the language of EngLang!

Unit 3: Language variation and purpose!

This is where the real fun begins. In Year 11, you explored the nuts and bolts of the course. Now, you’ll learn why speakers and writers make specific language choices to achieve their desired purposes, intents, and functions. In Area of Study 1, you’ll explore informal language and touch on what it means to be an Aussie. In Area of Study 2, you’ll contrast informality with formality and consider their roles in public and private domains. You’ll learn how register, tenor, and text types matter when communicating with your audience and how authors manipulate their language across the six subsystems to achieve a wide range of functions, including building rapport, encouraging solidarity, supporting in-group membership, and more!

Unit 4: Language variation and identity!

By now, you will have mastered most of the metalanguage you need. You’ll round out the year by learning about the identities and cultures that exist sociolinguistically in Australia today. You’ll explore the role of Standard Australian English (SAE) and the overt prestige it carries. You’ll contrast the overt norms afforded to the Standard with the covert norms exploited by diverse cultural and social groups to achieve their aspirations. The importance of Aboriginal English, migrant ethnolects, and the social attitudes that underpin our use of English will serve as the backdrop for this final unit.

THE ATAR STAR Method

How We Work With You

At ATAR STAR TUITION, we break English Language down into manageable pieces that you can actually work with. Instead of vague advice like “use more metalanguage,” we identify what metalanguage you’re missing and lay the groundwork for improvement by working with you until it sticks. Then, we give you structured, methodical, and precise ways of showcasing your understanding within your assessments, helping you write Analytical Commentaries step-by-step until you become fluent and brilliant. Most importantly, for the Essay, we help you find your own voice – because the best English Language students aren’t just good at regurgitating theory; they’re original thinkers with real-world examples to match!

Your Individual Journey

Everyone approaches English Language differently, and that’s exactly how it should be. At ATAR Star, we’ll work with your strengths, help you tackle the areas you find challenging, and build your confidence step by step. Our feedback is specific and actionable, focused on your unique goals and way of learning.

Skills That Last

The writing and thinking skills you’ll develop in English Language will help you far beyond Year 12. Our students find themselves better prepared for university assignments, more confident in job applications, and more articulate in whatever they choose to do next. That’s because we focus on building real skills, not just exam techniques. Do both, and you’ll ace that all-too-important exam.

Why We're Different

We get English Language. Not just the technical bits about metalanguage, AC structure, and examples, but the art of it – how to write with style while still giving examiners what they’re looking for. Our students don’t just learn to write better; they develop their own voice and discover what they actually want to say.

English Language doesn’t have to be a mystery, and you don’t have to figure it out alone. Let’s work together to get you where you want to go.
