Throughout my daughter’s years of high school English was always her weakest subject. As determined as she was, each and every year she’d start with the drive to succeed only to end up realising her efforts were not paying off; so, before year 12, she had asked/stated she needed a tutor.
Not having a post VCE career path already decided as most students already do added to her worry to succeed as she felt she had no end goal to aim for. So it all relied on each subject’s study score, results scaled up and results scaled down and so the jargon goes, giving her the ATAR that would in turn likely decide her fate for her. As a parent I just wanted her to try her best and somehow enjoy the process but to do that I needed to give her access to more tools and resources to utilise. Luca ensured his tutoring aligned with the specific and new 2024 study design for English Language within the VCE curriculum and assessment requirements. It was a fresh and stressful start for VCE English Language in 2024 as it seems schools and everyone was scrambling to understand this new course. This is your key to unlocking success in EngLang. Understanding the appropriate metalanguage allows you to identify and analyse stylistic and discourse features in a wide range of unseen texts. This isn’t about memorising arbitrary examples of metalanguage from a few texts or doing random exercises. We’ll help you become a metalanguage pro by strategically working through feature-rich, context-specific texts that give you a whole new language to work with – the language of EngLang!
This is where the real fun begins. In Year 11, you explored the nuts and bolts of the course. Now, you’ll learn why speakers and writers make specific language choices to achieve their desired purposes, intents, and functions. In Area of Study 1, you’ll explore informal language and touch on what it means to be an Aussie. In Area of Study 2, you’ll contrast informality with formality and consider their roles in public and private domains. You’ll learn how register, tenor, and text types matter when communicating with your audience and how authors manipulate their language across the six subsystems to achieve a wide range of functions, including building rapport, encouraging solidarity, supporting in-group membership, and more!
By now, you will have mastered most of the metalanguage you need. You’ll round out the year by learning about the identities and cultures that exist sociolinguistically in Australia today. You’ll explore the role of Standard Australian English (SAE) and the overt prestige it carries. You’ll contrast the overt norms afforded to the Standard with the covert norms exploited by diverse cultural and social groups to achieve their aspirations. The importance of Aboriginal English, migrant ethnolects, and the social attitudes that underpin our use of English will serve as the backdrop for this final unit.
